These form critical components of their social identities. Voters, particularly in America, tend to harbour strong positive and negative attachments to political parties. This is of particular importance for our work. The commonly observed pattern is that public opinion tends to follow, rather than lead, debate among political elites. Since its release the film has been made part of the curricula of many schools around the world, but some local school districts voiced their disapproval of its use without the presentation of opposing views.We have studied in detail how the media covered the issue of climate change since the 1980s and how it may have played a role in polarizing the American public. An Inconvenient Truth won Academy Awards in 2006 for best feature-length documentary feature and best song. However, they maintain that the science depicted in the film is largely accurate. Many climate scientists agree that some of the statements made in the film exaggerate projections or gloss over the nuances associated with the science of climate change. Gore’s descriptions of climatic processes and warming extrapolations have been criticized, particularly by skeptics of global warming.
